Environmental Justice Activities: CBC Annual Legislative Conference

The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Inc. (CBC or Foundation) will present the 47th Annual Legislative Conference at the Walter W. Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC, on September 20–24, 2017.

Friday, September 22, at 10:00 a.m., the Environmental Justice Braintrust will present a session entitled, INFRASTRUCTURE. The Braintrust focuses on the unique relationship between environmental protection, environmental justice, economic development, and human health. The panelists include:

  • The Honorable Stephen K. Benjamin, Mayor, City of Columbia, Vice President, The United States Conference of Mayors, Columbia, SC);
  • Clarence Anthony, CEO/Executive Director, National League of Cities (Washington, DC);
  • Annika Moman, Senior Vice President, Power and Energy Services at AECOM (Arlington, VA);
  • Dr. Lauren Alexander Augustine, Director Office of Special Projects, Director Program on Risk, Resilience, and Extreme Events–Policy and Global Affairs, The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (Washington, DC).

A recent report card from the American Society of Civil Engineers indicated that the United States’ overall grade for infrastructure is a D+. Although infrastructure plays a role in the unique relationship of environmental protection (particularly air and water), environmental justice, energy, economic development, and human health in communities across the country. This year’s Braintrust will look at the nation’s failing infrastructure and the impact it has on the lives of all citizens with a keen focus on disadvantaged communities.
