Sato, Rahal Head Honda Qualifying Effort at Mid-Ohio
- Takuma Sato to start Honda Indy 200 from third
- Hometown favorite Graham Rahal to line up fourth
- Five-time Mid-Ohio winner Scott Dixon qualifies sixth.
Indianapolis 500 winner Takuma Sato and Ohio native son Graham Rahal led the way for Honda Saturday in Verizon IndyCar Series qualifying for Sunday's Honda Indy 200 at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.
After advancing to final-round qualifying, Sato will start third and Rahal, seeking his second Mid-Ohio victory in the last three years, will start fourth. Scott Dixon, who has won a series-high five times at Mid-Ohio, will start his Honda from sixth on the grid for Chip Ganassi Racing.
Long Beach race winner James Hinchcliffe continued his string of strong qualifying performances today, and will start from eighth for Schmidt Peterson Motorsports. Andretti Autosport teammates Alexander Rossi and Ryan Hunter-Reay qualified ninth and 10th, respectively.
Making his first appearance at the challenging Mid-Ohio circuit, Esteban Gutierrez advanced to the second qualifying round and will start his Honda 12th for Dale Coyne Racing. Live television coverage of Sunday's 90-lap Honda Indy 200 starts at 3 p.m. EDT, on CNBC.
Graham Rahal (Rahal Letterman Lanigan Honda) qualified 4th: "To have the Steak 'n Shake Honda fourth in qualifying is special, but we would have liked to be on pole. I messed up on my best lap in [final round qualifying] and we lost a lot [of time] on the very start of the final lap. I don't know if we had enough [for pole], but we were definitely better than fourth, so I'm a little disappointed. It's great for our team and program to be up front once again. We've got a good starting spot, and hopefully can battle from there."
