Speech: making trade work for workers
Policy | Brussels, 28 June 2017
EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmström set out how EU trade policy helps workers – with trade supporting jobs in Europe, and provisions included in trade agreements to promote and enforce issues such as labour rights.
Speaking at an event in the European Parliament, hosted by the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung think tank, the Commissioner outlined how the EU's positive, long-term engagement with its partners could build lasting change in this area; with binding, enforceable measures on sustainable development included in the EU's trade agreements.
The Commissioner added that she was open to evidence on the advantages and disadvantages of different options in this area, and hoped there would be a wide debate on the topic.
