Palo Alto, Calif., June 05, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) released a report that provides a vision for standards that support the deployment of augmented reality (AR), the technology that overlays the physical world with digital objects and information technology.

The report, "Enterprise AR Vision, Interoperability Requirements, and Standards Landscape,” informs the energy industry and other sectors of the importance of augmented reality to the future workplace, which will feature wearable worker technology that enables more efficiency and a safer work environment. It also catalogues standards activities that would facilitate making an augmented workplace a reality.

It found that the key to the future workplace is interoperability: the extent to which systems and devices can exchange data and interpret that shared data. It provides a basis for collaboration to advance open and interoperable AR in the workplace and highlights the need for open communications platforms rather than proprietary ones that are barriers to interoperability.
