Dementia Care Specialist Susan Kohler of Connected Hearts to be Featured on CUTV News Radio
VENICE, CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES, May 3, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ -- If you are caring for a loved one with dementia, then you know just how difficult the simple act of communication can be. Indeed, dementia places a terrible burden on families and the difficulty of caring for a loved one with dementia is an experience fraught with emotion and above all frustration.
Susan Kohler has a passion for working with the elderly, especially those living with dementia. Kohler is a dementia care specialist and co-founder of Connected Hearts, a unique, experiential training program that uses the subtle powers of communication to make meaningful, emotional connections with persons living with dementia.
“The true essence of communication is only made when there’s a connection,” says Kohler. “These techniques work and they create the responses to improve quality of life, positive interactions, and safety and cooperation with daily care.”
Kohler has worked with the elderly population in hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, home and Adult Day Health Care settings for over 25 years, but it was a chance encounter with a dementia patient that changed everything.
“I was working in a nursing home and sitting in a nurse’s station documenting,” recalls Kohler. “A woman approached in a wheel chair with a feeding tube. All she did was babble so all anyone else did was ignore her, which bothered me. I looked up at her and our eyes met and I said, ‘Good morning.’ All of a sudden, she stopped babbling, smiled and said, ‘Thank you.’ That moment changed my life. There was something telling me to reach out to these people.”
“Just because someone has dementia doesn’t mean they no longer desire human connection,” says Kohler.
Kohler is the author of How to Communicate with Alzheimer’s, a groundbreaking book on dementia care that offers simple communication techniques to help family members and caregivers make an emotional connection when caring for their loved ones.
Kohler says she developed these innovative communication strategies drawing on her experience as an artist and performer.
“For an actor, connecting with your audience is so important,” says Kohler. “Only with that initial connection do you have their attention. Once you have their attention, you are free to communicate.”
