Speech: Commissioner Malmström in Washington D.C.

Policy | Washington, DC, 24 April 2017

EU Commissioner for Trade Cecilia Malmström is in Washington D.C. today to accept the Woman of the Year Award from the Association of Women in International Trade.

In an address to accept the award, the Commissioner noted the increasing focus on the role of trade in promoting gender equality — a topic dealt with in bilateral trade agreements, by the World Trade Organization, and by grassroots activists.

Noting that advancing women's equality is also an economic issue – potentially adding $28 trillion to global GDP by 2025 – she highlighted the need for better data and evidence on the topic, with an international forum on women in trade scheduled for June.

During her two-day trip, the Commissioner also meets Wilbur Ross, Secretary of Commerce of the US; John Cornyn, Senate Majority Whip and Member of the Senate Finance Committee; Orrin Hatch, Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee; and Ron Wyden, Ranking Member of the Senate Finance Committee.
