CALGARY, Alberta, April 04, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- With over 3 decades of professional speaking and over 5 decades of experience living without arms, Alvin Law has had a direct role in raising over $175,000,000 for charity. He has appeared on countless telethons, and media features, played a character on the hit TV show ‘The X-Files’, and won an Emmy for one of several television documentaries about his life. After Alvin’s keynote speech and a specially prepared 3 course meal, he will join the band Millennium who is featured in the Calgary Civic Symphony. The money the silent auction raises will go towards the Calgary Library literacy program It's A Crime Not To Read.

Fifteen years ago the Calgary Public Library partnered with Calgary Police Service launching the first It’s A Crime Not To Read program at Colonel J Fred Scott Elementary School. During the 2015-2016 school year this award winning program was delivered to 21 public and separate elementary schools across the city. This connection gives children the literacy tools they need to achieve better school performance and higher employment and earning levels, and creates strong positive relationships between communities, their public library and local police.

Dan Goldberg, the Fundraising director for Rotary East, has passionately stated, “I am trying to expand this program and create a sustainable financial future for It’s A Crime Not To Read.  I would love to get more traction with this fundraiser and the media would be a great way to educate the public about Rotary, Calgary Public Library and the Calgary Police department’s role in this amazing program. In addition, Alvin Law's previous literacy struggles and his incredible musical abilities will make an outstanding positive story the public will want to hear.”
