Speech: The future of EU trade policy

Policy | Brussels, 24 January 2017

"Trade is worth fighting for", said Commissioner Cecilia Malmström in a speech today in which she outlined the future of EU trade policy.

Speaking at economic think tank Bruegel, the Commissioner noted that not only do 31 million jobs in the EU depend on exports; but that trade can also be a way to engage with other nations to foster change.

She then set out the EU's trade agenda for 2017 and beyond: with a trade policy which is effective, transparent and based on values. This includes a new, country-neutral approach to anti-dumping; a transparent and predictable investment court system; and using trade policy as a vehicle for values such as the environment and human rights.
