A New, Free Resource For Aspiring Peacemakers

Most of us want peace on earth, but where do we begin? How about a free, introductory, online course? You might expect there to be a wide variety of such courses online, but you'd be mistaken. For example, searches on Udemy and Coursera currently yield zero results. Such courses are actually very few in number. And what can be found online is usually either highly academic or politically biased. To remedy this situation a website called PeaceCourse.org has just launched a project which it developed to fill this specific need.

Designed for young adults and aspiring peacemakers, the lessons in this introductory peace studies course are comprised mostly of famous speeches and essays. You'll hear advice from historical giants such as Martin Luther King, Jr., Mohandas Gandhi, Dorothy Day, Thich Nhat Hanh, Albert Schweitzer, Henry David Thoreau, and more.

Most of the topics feature mp3 audio narration and high impact photography, not merely paragraphs of text. The audio files can even be downloaded and saved to a computer, mp3 player, or smartphone.

Digging into the lessons, first you get a historical overview of when, how, and why nonviolence works. Next you will see how the golden rule spans nearly all religious traditions. As you progress you will learn about the axioms of nonviolence, the innermost thoughts of famous peace activists, the duty of civil disobedience, the power of nonviolent resistance, and how peace is every step.

When planning the curriculum, the creators of PeaceCourse.org consulted several peace institutes, nonprofit organizations, and teachers of peace studies. Excellent content was gleaned from and freely shared by sources like the Center for Teaching Peace and the International Center on Nonviolent Conflict. The result is a unique blend of introductory information intended to inspire further interest in peace studies.

Hundreds of people from all around the world have taken the course. For several years the website was hosted and maintained under the umbrella of an interfaith organization called Monks Without Borders, but in 2012 that organization was restructured and the course went offline. Feeling a renewed sense of urgency to share this information with a world that very much needs it, its original creators, Zach Perlman and Ryan Duggan, have decided to put it back online.
