PotashCorp supports school nutrition programs for sixth year running

Saskatoon, Saskatchewan – Saskatoon’s school divisions are celebrating their partnership with PotashCorp, which has seen the company contribute more than $2 million to school nutrition programs since 2011.

Students from both school divisions enjoyed a picnic-style snack this morning at Caroline Robins School after PotashCorp announced a $280,000 donation for this school year.

“It’s critical that school nutrition programs are there to help kids who need them. We know children are healthier and happier when they can access the food they need to learn and grow,” said Denita Stann, PotashCorp’s Senior Vice President of Investor and Public Relations. “Improving local food security in this way is important to us at PotashCorp.”

PotashCorp is contributing $150,000 to Saskatoon Public Schools for the 2016-2017 school year and $130,000 to Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools.

Since 2011, PotashCorp has provided a total of $2,155,000 to the school divisions. The funding helps provide breakfasts, lunch and snacks at about three dozen schools throughout the city and helps support food education and community gardens at several schools.

“We know that students who come to school hungry are less attentive and less receptive to learning,” said Zeba Ahmad, board chair of the Saskatoon Public Schools Foundation. “The generous, ongoing support of PotashCorp helps the Foundation and the school division provide nutritious food to students so they are well-nourished and able to learn. This annual commitment continues to strengthen a partnership that plays an important role in responding to the needs of students and school communities.”

“We’re so pleased to have the continued support of PotashCorp for our school nutrition programs,” said Diane Boyko, chair of Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools’ Board of Education. “Recent reports of food bank usage going up in our city and province really highlight the importance of coming together as a community to help those who are vulnerable and give our children everything they need to succeed. We’re fortunate to have a community partner like PotashCorp.”

As the world’s largest crop nutrient company, PotashCorp plays an integral role in global food production. The company produces the three essential nutrients required to help farmers grow healthier, more abundant crops. With global population rising and diets improving in developing countries, crop nutrients such as potash, phosphates and nitrogen offer a responsible and practical solution to help produce the food we need, from the land we have..
