Elsevier Updates Major Reference Work, "Encyclopedia of Applied Plant Sciences"

New Edition Reflects Greater Focus on the Role of Applied Science in Agricultural Production

/EINPresswire.com/ -- CAMBRIDGE, MA--(Marketwired - October 06, 2016) - Elsevier, a world-leading provider of scientific, technical and medical information products and services, today announced the publication of the second edition of its major reference work, Encyclopedia of Applied Plant Sciences, edited by Brian Thomas, Denis Murphy and Brian Murray. The updated volume presents complete, authoritative information on more than 25 separate areas of plant science, covering both theory and applications. The Encyclopedia will be part of Elsevier's forthcoming Reference Module in Life Sciences. Elsevier also announced two additional new plant science books.

Since the first edition of Encyclopedia of Applied Plant Sciences was published, fluctuations in global food production affecting prices and availability to consumers have brought the role of applied science in agricultural production into greater focus. At the same time, technological advances have changed the way plant science is done. The new edition has been expanded to include specific chapters on leading crops and crop types, as well as updated chapters on plant development, photosynthesis, metabolism, nutrition, reproduction, seed biology, plant pests and diseases, weed biology and responses to environmental stresses. This concise reference reflects recent progress, particularly in genome sequencing and molecular genetics and biotechnology, including genetic modification. The three-volume set places these developments in the wider context of biodiversity, food security, intellectual property and ethical considerations.

In order to meet content needs in plant science, Elsevier uses proprietary tools to identify the gaps in coverage of the topics. Editorial teams strategically fill those gaps with content written by key influencers in the field, giving students, faculty and researchers the content they need to answer challenging questions and improve outcomes. These new books, which will educate the next generation of plant scientists and provide critical foundational content for information professionals, are key examples of how Elsevier is enabling science to drive innovation.
