Premier Foods hit on the winning formula at last night's prestigious Food and Drink Federation (FDF) Awards when it won the prize for 'Product Reformulation of the Year' for its Homepride cooking sauce range. The Awards celebrated the leading businesses and people in the food and drink industry and were held at The Brewery in London.

The team behind the Homepride range, which is targeted at mainstream consumers, have embarked on major reformulation programme over the last year. The programme includes salt reduction on 16 products in readiness to deliver the latest Department of Health 2017 salt target; 21 products (constituting over half the range) to deliver 1 of 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day; and, finally, reformulating the pasta bake range to contain extra vegetables and no added sugar.

During the reformulation, Premier Foods worked to ensure Homepride still provides tasty, quality products, while also supporting families to make healthier and affordable meal choices. Marrying the aims of reducing salt and sugar, while safeguarding taste meant that much work went into the reformulation programme and consumer testing to ensure the balance was just right.

FDF's Director General, Ian Wright, said: “In the UK today, we enjoy the biggest range of affordable, quality and safe food and drink ever. The most successful companies know that you need to innovate to keep up with changing consumer tastes and preferences – by creating exciting new variants or improving the healthiness of existing products, for instance.

“With the new and improved Homepride range – will less salt, sugar and more vegetables – Premier Foods have adapted family favourites for health without compromising on taste. I'm certain that this success story will inspire other companies to appreciate the benefits of reformulation – both to their customers and their business.”

In addition to this award, Premier Foods also won the prizes for Food Scientist of the Year, Campaign of the Year, and was highly commended in the Rising Star category.
