Make it a Union Made Cookout
The Homestead Strike began as a lockout June 30, 1892. The five-month strike became one of the most bitter labor disputes in U.S. history involving one of the most powerful corporations, Carnegie Steel, and one of the nation’s largest trade unions of the day. When the lockout turned to a strike, the company sent in the Pinkerton Guards. When the tide turned in favor of the workers, the state sent in the National Guard and the company had more than 160 striking workers thrown in jail and tried for murder and treason. Luckily, they were acquitted but their cause was already defeated. A private army, the state army, and the company’s huge New York City law firm were mustered to defeat workers who made as little as $100 a month. #UnionHistory #PROUAW ... See MoreSee Less
