Dr. Tattelbaum says, "Ten years ago it was very common for patients to bring in photos of models that they would like to look like, today many of my patients are pulling out their phones and showing photos of areas of their body they would like improved, or selfie images of celebrities or models they would like to look like." Dr. Tattelbaum also reports that the selfie photos have also helped with on-line consultations, many patients that live far away and plan on flying in for surgery we can now do an on-line consultation with their plastic surgeon.

Dr. Tattelbaum also believes that the selfie is causing an increase in cosmetic surgery procedures nationwide. Dr. Tattelbaum says, "We are now all in the publishing business, social media has caused many people to want surgery because they don't like how they look in their social media photos." Dr. Tattelbaum reports that many times a patient will come in and say they hate the way they look in photos and want to correct it with cosmetic surgery. He reports that the breast augmentation and mommy makeovers are his most sought after procedures.

Dr. Tattelbaum says, "It is very common these days for a patient to bring in a photo of themselves and say, look at my friends or my sister I want my body to look like theirs." For many, looking good in social media also helps with self-esteem according to Dr. Tattelbaum, but he warns it is important to do a thorough interview of each client to make sure they are psychologically stable. He reports, "It is commonplace to turn away patients that we feel are addicted to surgery and their image, we do a complete interview with all of our patients prior to surgery."

Dr. Tattelbaum is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and attended medical school at Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City. He was Chief Resident at New York's Mount Sinai Medical Center and completed his plastic surgery training at Georgetown University and Harvard University. Dr. Tattelbaum is a double board certified plastic surgeon who is dual certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery as well as the American Board of Surgery.
