NREL Engineer Sheila Hayter Installed as ASHRAE Officer

Sheila Hayter, a group manager in the Integrated Applications Center at the Energy Department's (DOE) National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), has been officially installed as treasurer of ASHRAE (the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers) at its 2016 annual conference in St. Louis, Mo.
Hayter's role as treasurer is the beginning of a three-year commitment to industry leadership, culminating in serving as the president of ASHRAE during the 2018-2019 term.
"A leadership role at ASHRAE is a significant opportunity to make an impact toward sustainability in the built environment and perfectly complements the work we are doing at NREL," Hayter said. "NREL and ASHRAE are both recognized leaders for the future of energy efficiency and renewable energy, and I look forward to being able to use this opportunity to support the mission of each organization."
As the treasurer, Hayter will serve on the board of directors and ASHRAE's Executive Committee, chair the Finance Committee and serve as vice chair of the Members Council, the President-Elect Advisory Committee and the Grassroots Government Advocacy Committee.
At NREL, Hayter leads a team of technical and policy experts who support federal, state and local entities on renewable energy and energy efficiency topics with the goal to make significant reductions in non-renewable energy consumption through energy efficiency and the increased use of renewable technologies.
Since joining NREL in 1992, Hayter led DOE's SolarAmerica Cities technical assistance activities, now part of the DOE SunShot Initiative's Solar Energy Resource Center, with a goal to assist municipalities in incorporating strategies into projects that resulted in widespread application of solar technologies. She was a core member of the organizing committee for the DOE Solar Decathlon competitions and led the subjective judging component for these competitions. Hayter has managed technical teams supporting federal agencies' efforts to address energy efficiency and renewable energy objectives-in addition to having managed sustainable buildings activities funded by the DOE Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) and the Photovoltaics for Buildings activities funded by DOE's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.
Hayter has previously served two terms as ASHRAE vice president and one term as a director-at-large. She is the recipient of ASHRAE's Distinguished Service Award, Exceptional Service Award, and an ASHRAE Technology Award. She is an ASHRAE Fellow and a Distinguished Lecturer.
