Demand for Russian gas remaining high in France
A working meeting between Alexey Miller, Chairman of the Gazprom Management Committee, and Gerard Mestrallet, Chairman of the Engie Board of Directors, took place today at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum 2016.
The parties discussed Russian gas exports to France. In 2015, the exports grew by 36.8 per cent versus 2014. The growth trend continues in 2016: according to preliminary data, Gazprom's gas supplies to the French Republic from January 1 through June 15 increased by 34.6 per cent compared to the same period of 2015.
Special attention was paid at the meeting to the progress of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline construction.
Background
France's ENGIE (prior to 2015 – GDF SUEZ) implements natural gas exploration, production, processing and marketing, as well as power generation projects.
Gazprom and Engie cooperate in gas supply and transmission (Nord Stream project). The companies also interact in the sci-tech development and personnel training areas, as well as pursue joint cultural projects.
On September 4, 2015, Gazprom, BASF/Wintershall, Engie, OMV, Shell, and Uniper inked the Shareholders Agreement to construct the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline system with the annual capacity of 55 billion cubic meters from Russia to Germany across the Baltic Sea.
