Health Leaders to Debate Top 3 Motions -- 8:30am -- Westin Hotel at National Health Leadership Conference
/EINPresswire.com/ -- Aboriginal health issues, preventable events and healthcare innovation will be the top three motions debated today by the 750 health leaders attending the National Health Leadership Conference (NHLC) in Ottawa. The movers of the motion will go head to head in a debate moderated by Mr. Jeffrey Simpson, renowned Globe and Mail's national affairs columnist at 8:30am in Confederation room of the Westin Hotel.
The showdown will happen in an election-style debate, where Mr. Simpson will be assisted by Wendy Nicklin, President-elect of the International Society for Quality in Health Care and Alex Munter, President and CEO of the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO). Reporters in attendance will also be invited to ask questions from the floor.
The top three motions were shortlisted yesterday from five motions. They are:
1. Indigenous Health -- Truth and Reconciliation Commission Health-Related Recommendations
Resolved, that health care leaders commit to addressing widening health inequities and quality of care of First Nation, Métis and Inuit patients by working to implement the Calls to Action for health from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, beginning with recommendation 19 to, "… establish measurable goals to identify and close the gaps in health outcomes… to publish annual progress reports and assess long-term trends… " and establish a co-ordinated Action Plan for the other recommendations, in partnership with Indigenous Peoples, in the next three years.

2. Public reporting of the 15 Never Events
Resolved, that provincial/territorial governments across Canada commit to patient safety by requiring mandatory public reporting of the 15 Never Events for Hospital Care in Canada within the next three years.

3. Adopt key recommendations from the Report of the Advisory Panel on Healthcare Innovation ("Naylor Report")
Resolved, that the federal government adopt the recommendations in the Report of the Advisory Panel on Healthcare Innovation related to the creation of a Healthcare Innovation Fund, supported by appropriate funding, starting with $1 billion over 5 years, as part of the next Health Accord.

The debate will conclude with a final vote on the number one motion that delegates feel should be the highest priority to advance the healthcare system.
