Plano Dentist Participates in Auction to Benefit Autism Program

PLANO, TEXAS --(Marketwired - April 29, 2016) - A Plano dental office is donating services to support an institution that brings technical training and employment opportunities to people with autism.

/EINPresswire.com/ -- 1st in Smiles, operated by Dr. Rick Barfield, donated in-office whitening treatments as part of a silent auction and gala held on April 16 to benefit the nonPareil Institute. The institute has a location on the Southern Methodist University north campus in Plano.

"This was a great opportunity for us to get involved and make a difference in the community," Dr. Barfield said. "I work closely with dental patients who have been diagnosed on the autism spectrum, so the nonPareil Institute is close to my heart."

The nonPareil Institute is a nonprofit technology company that offers housing and employment opportunities to people on the autism spectrum. The company trains workers to develop digital products like applications and games.

The institute opened its first operation in Plano in September 2010. The program started with eight students and then grew to more than 50 students in about eight months. There are now 180 active members. The company has produced more than eight applications for mobile devices in the iTunes store.

"The nonPareil Institute is quickly making a difference in our community, and we're overjoyed to help their effort of changing the lives of those diagnosed with autism," Dr. Barfield said.
