MONTERREY, Mexico, April 07, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Mexican airport operator Grupo Aeroportuario del Centro Norte, S.A.B. de C.V., known as OMA (NASDAQ:OMAB) (BMV:OMA), reports that terminal passenger traffic at its 13 airports increased 9.4% in March 2016, as compared to March 2015. Domestic traffic increased 11.9%, and international traffic decreased 3.0%.

Of total March traffic, 98.1% was commercial aviation and 1.9% was general aviation.

*Terminal passengers: includes passengers on the three types of aviation (commercial, charter, and general aviation), and excludes passengers in transit.
                                 
Domestic traffic increased in eleven airports in March. The most noteworthy increases were in Monterrey (+10.1%; +57,158 passengers), Culiacán (+23.9%; +27,488), Ciudad Juárez (+19.3%; +13,756), Mazatlán (+31.0%; +13,433), and Durango (+49.2%; +10,621).  Monterrey traffic increased principally because of higher traffic volumes on the Cancún, Tijuana, Puerto Vallarta, San José del Cabo, and Mérida routes.  Culiacán traffic increased as a result of increased volumes on the Tijuana route.  Ciudad Juárez traffic increased because of higher volumes on the Guadalajara, Monterrey, and Chihuahua routes.  Durango traffic increased on its Tijuana and Mexico City routes. 

During March, Volaris opened the Monterrey – Bajío, Monterrey – Toluca, and Zihuatanejo –Mexico City routes; and TAR opened the Monterrey – Cuernavaca route.

International traffic also increased in seven airports in March. Traffic increased most significantly in Durango (+122.8%; +1,759), principally because of higher volumes on its Chicago route.

The number of flight operations (takeoffs and landings) in March increased 1.9%. The number of domestic operations increased 2.7%, and international operations decreased 2.9%.
