April Is Paralyzed Veterans Awareness Month

/EINPresswire.com/ -- WASHINGTON, DC--(Marketwired - April 04, 2016) - April marks Paralyzed Veterans of America Month. Throughout the month of April, Paralyzed Veterans of America (Paralyzed Veterans) and its 34 chapters across the country will be highlighting the unique challenges veterans with spinal cord injury or disease (SCI/D) face, and how people can get involved and help. According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, approximately 44,000 veterans live with spinal cord injury or disease. Paralyzed Veterans of America is the only veterans organization dedicated to serving veterans with SCI/D.

"This April, during Paralyzed Veterans Awareness Month, we're encouraging the public to really get involved and learn about the unique challenges paralyzed veterans face and how they can help and give back to support these veterans," said Al Kovach, Jr., national president of Paralyzed Veterans of America. "We will also be celebrating the accomplishments of some of our veteran members living with spinal cord injury and all that they have achieved despite their disability. Our members are active and playing sports, some aspiring to compete at the Paralympic level; they are going back to work in fulfilling jobs and careers; some are starting their own successful businesses, or going back to school to earn their degree; and many are continuing to give back and serve other fellow paralyzed veterans to let them know that life is not over after injury."

Paralyzed Veterans is encouraging the public to get involved and support our nation's paralyzed veterans by doing one of the following:

  • Hire a Veteran: if you run a business, consider hiring a veteran. Paralyzed Veterans' Operation PAVE (Paving Access for Veterans Employment) program works directly with employers to find qualified employees.
  • Share your story: Paralyzed Veterans is currently looking for individuals to share their travel experiences as a passenger with a disability on its new website www.airaccess30.org. These stories will help Paralyzed Veterans continue the fight to ensure that people with disabilities receive consistent and nondiscriminatory treatment during air travel.
  • Get involved: Volunteer your time to help veterans. Contact your nearest Paralyzed Veterans Chapter to learn about volunteer opportunities at www.pva.org/chapters.
  • Donate now: Donate to Paralyzed Veterans now and help support our programs and services that are provided free of charge to veterans. Programs like adaptive and rehabilitative sports and recreation, benefits and employment counseling, and research and advocacy to ensure our nation's paralyzed veterans have a voice.

Paralyzed Veterans chapters across the country will also be holding local awareness events throughout the month of April. To locate a chapter near you, visit www.pva.org/chapters.
