Bitcasa Announces U.S. Patent for Increased Efficiency of Data Encryption

With Heightened Focus on Data Encryption, Company Proves Security Does Not Have to Come at the Expense of Efficiency

/EINPresswire.com/ -- SAN MATEO, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 03/16/16 -- Bitcasa, the cloud drive for the device economy, today announced that the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has issued U.S. Patent 9253166, which combines their industry-leading security model with more efficient bandwidth utilization using deduplication and smart caching techniques.

The explosion of connected devices, content creation and sharing, and faster connection speeds is forecast to drive one billion additional people to use cloud storage by 2019. This has opened a tremendous opportunity for device manufacturers, network operators, and software developers to use the cloud to attract and retain customers. However, it has also exposed the inherent security risks and transit shortcomings of cloud storage.

"This patent demonstrates that Bitcasa has solved the long-standing problem of providing both encrypted data and efficient cloud storage," says Brian Taptich, CEO at Bitcasa. "We believe that security and privacy are fundamental rights for all users. But they should not come at the expense of performance."

The patent describes Bitcasa's process of simultaneous, convergent encryption and deduplication, combined with smart caching, which is accomplished using three methods:

  • Each block of data is encrypted using its own self-generated convergent key. These keys are themselves encrypted by a self-generated master key that only each user knows,
  • The client device minimizes bandwidth utilization by determining whether the encrypted data blocks to transfer are already present in the cloud,
  • The client device informs the cloud drive which data is likely to be required in the future so it can be made available with less latency if the client device requests the data.

Deduplication allows Bitcasa to benefit from the operational efficiencies resulting from the exclusion of redundant data. Cost-savings are passed on to partners, while users benefit from zero-knowledge encryption and a better user experience.

Filed in May of 2012, and issued on February 2, 2016, US Patent 9253166 includes 162 claims, all of which are detailed on the US Patent & Trademark Office, Patent Full Text and Image Database.
