School for Tomorrow Students Earn National Awards for Arts and Writing
"At School for Tomorrow we value and nurture our students' individuality and creativity in numerous ways," said Alan Shusterman, Founder and Head of School for Tomorrow (SFT). "Our students are incredibly talented, and we're thrilled to see them honored on such a competitive national platform."
The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards were established in 1923 with the intention of honoring students in the arts in equal measure as their athletic classmates. Since, they've honored countless winners who later became icons in their chosen fields -- from Andy Warhol to Sylvia Plath to Robert Redford.
The award-winners from SFT -- a 10th grader, two 11th graders, and two 12th graders -- submitted work that stood out from hundreds of thousands of entries. Three SFT students were chosen for their writing submissions and two for their visual artwork.
Their works were honored for fulfilling the core values championed by the Awards: skill, originality, and unique voice.
"We started SFT seven years ago on a shoestring to show what kids are capable of doing and becoming given a different kind of school; and our students continue to do so on a daily basis. We were already pleased that these five SFT students took the initiative to enter this prestigious contest," Shusterman said. "It's icing on the cake that Scholastic has recognized them for their hard work and impressive achievements."
