The answer is “no.” There are at least nine different viruses in the herpes family that cause disease. (1)

The Center for the Biology of Chronic Disease (CBCD)’s November 2015 survey found that 88% of participants did not know that there are at least nine herpes viruses that cause disease.
Many people are only familiar with two of them that cause symptoms, such as painful mouth or genital sores that people commonly associate with the name, “Herpes.” These two viruses are HSV-1 and HSV-2. “Both types can cause symptoms on the genitals (genital herpes), the face (facial cold sores), or the hand or finger (called a herpetic whitlow).” (1)

There are seven other viruses in the herpes family, however, that cause disease. The public should be aware, therefore, that all herpes viruses belong to one of three groups (sub-types in the herpes family of viruses). These viruses “belong to the following three families:

• Alpha-herpesviruses: HSV 1 and 2; VZV - these have a relatively short reproductive cycle, variable host range, efficiently destroy infected cells and establish latent infections primarily in sensory ganglia.

• Beta-herpesviruses: CMV, HHV-6 and HHV-7 - these have long reproductive cycles and a restricted host range. Infected cells often enlarge. Latency can be maintained in the white cells of the blood, kidneys, secretory glands and other tissues.

• Gamma-herpesviruses: EBV and HHV-8 - these are specific for either T or B lymphocytes, and latency is often demonstrated in lymphoid tissue.” (2)

When an individual experiences symptoms, depending on the strain of herpes with which he or she is infected, that person can develop cold sores or genital herpes. The CDC notes that when a genital herpes virus causes symptoms, an individual usually experiences “one or more blisters on or around the genitals, rectum or mouth. The blisters break and leave painful sores that may take weeks to heal. These symptoms are sometimes called “having an outbreak.” The first time someone has an outbreak they may also have flu-like symptoms such as fever, body aches, or swollen glands. Repeat outbreaks of genital herpes are common, especially during the first year after infection. Repeat outbreaks are usually shorter and less severe than the first outbreak.” (3)

However, besides HSV-1 and HSV-2, there are seven other viruses in the herpes family. These viruses include: the “Varicella-zoster virus (also called herpes zoster). This causes chickenpox and shingles which are occasionally mistaken for herpes simplex. Shingles is a recurrence of chickenpox and in the elderly it may cause painful nerve damage. Cytomegalovirus (CMV) and Epstein Barr virus, also called glandular fever. These viruses do not cause spots or blisters like herpes simplex. They may cause flu-like illnesses. And four others: humanherpes viruses 6, 6a, 7 and 8.” (1)

The Center for the Biology of Chronic Disease (CBCD) recommends that anyone diagnosed with a herpes virus take Gene-Eden-VIR or Novirin. The formula of these natural antiviral products was shown to reduce symptoms associated with herpes viruses in two separate post-marketing clinical studies that followed FDA guidelines. Additionally, it was designed to help the immune system target the latent form of these viruses.
