The Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) can cause a condition called encephalitis, which is an inflammation of brain tissue. “The viral prodrome (pre-disease symptoms) typically consists of fever, headache, nausea and vomiting, lethargy, and myalgias.” (2)

When brain tissues are inflammed due to EBV infection it can cause many different disease symptoms. For example, “the signs of encephalitis may be diffuse or focal. Typical findings include the following: altered mental status, personality changes (very common), local findings (eg, hemiparesis, focal seizures, and autonomic dysfunction), movement disorders (eg, St Louis encephalitis, eastern equine encephalitis, and western equine encephalitis), taxia, cranial nerve defects, dysphagia, particularly in rabies, meningismus (less common and less pronounced than in meningitis), unilateral sensorimotor dysfunction (postinfectious encephalomyelitis).” (2)

As Dr. Pizzigallo and colleagues wrote in a review “EBV-associated neurological syndromes represent … complications in infectious mononucleosis, and include acute encephalitis, meningitis, acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM), cerebellitis and myelitis.” (3) All of the diseases mentioned by Dr. Pizzigallo are serious illnesses of the brain and central nervous system. Dr. Pizzigallo is from the Clinic of Infectious Diseases at the “G. D’Annunzio” University of Chieti in Italy.

EBV is very common. “EBV infects B and T lymphocytes of more than 90% of the general population before adulthood. Primary infection results in transient viremia (a temporary, acute infection with clear symptoms) followed by a rapid immune response.” (4) EBV is also associated with a growing number of cancers.

EBV infection has two phases, acute/reactivation and latency. During the latent phase, the virus continues to replicate on a small scale, and produces only some of its proteins.

The Center for the Biology of Chronic Disease (CBCD) recommends that in light of the medical evidence, individuals concerned about infection with the latent EBV take Gene-Eden-VIR or Novirin. The formula of these natural, antiviral supplements was designed to help the immune system target the latent form of the Epstein-Barr Virus.

The formula of Gene-Eden-VIR and Novirin was tested by Hanan Polansky and Edan Itzkovitz from the CBCD in two clinical studies that followed FDA guidelines.
