Study: Anti-HIV Gel May be Effective against Herpes; The CBCD Reviews the Medical Evidence
Pericoital application of tenofovir gel reduced HSV-2 acquisition in women. (1)
“Infected with the herpes virus (HSV-1 or HSV-2)? The CBCD recommends taking Gene-Eden-VIR or Novirin.” - Greg Bennett, CBCD
A South African study found that women who “religiously” applied an antiviral gel normally used against HIV, also prevented genital herpes infections. Dr. Salim and colleagues wrote that the researchers “assessed the effectiveness of pericoital tenofovir gel, an antiviral microbicide, in preventing HSV-2 ...” (1) The study found that “among women who used tenofovir gel, the annual rate of infection with the genital herpes virus, known as herpes simplex virus type 2 or HSV-2, was 10.2 percent versus a rate of 21 percent for women who used a placebo gel.” (2) Chief author Dr. Salim Abdool Karim of the Center for the AIDS Program of Research in South Africa told Reuters Health that “if a woman was concerned about acquiring herpes simplex virus type 2, this would be the best protection available.” (2)
However, this gel is not on the market, and is not currently available for the public’s use. The Center for the Biology of Chronic Disease (CBCD) reminds the public that developing an effective, FDA approved drug takes time. Until this antiviral gel is FDA approved, the CBCD recommends that infected individuals take Novirin or Gene-Eden-VIR, which are HSV-2 remedies backed by clinical studies.

The formula of Gene-Eden-VIR and Novirin was tested by Hanan Polansky and Edan Itzkovitz from the Center for the Biology of Chronic Disease (CBCD) in two clinical studies that followed FDA guidelines. The studies showed that the Gene-Eden-VIR formula is effective against HSV-2 and other herpes viruses. The clinical studies were published in the peer reviewed, medical journal Pharmacology & Pharmacy, the first, in a special edition on Advances in Antiviral Drugs. Study authors wrote that, “individuals infected with the (HSV-2 and other viruses)…reported a safe decrease in their symptoms following treatment with Gene-Eden-VIR.” (3) The study authors also wrote that, “We observed a statistically significant decrease in the severity, duration, and frequency of symptoms.” (3)

Gene-Eden-VIR and Novirin are natural antiviral dietary supplements. Their formula contains five natural ingredients: Selenium, Camellia Sinesis Extract, Quercetin, Cinnamomum Extract, and Licorice Extract. The first ingredient is a trace element, and the other four are plant extracts. Each ingredient and its dose was chosen through a scientific approach. Scientists at polyDNA, the company that invented and patented the formula, scanned thousands of scientific and medical papers published in various medical and scientific journals, and identified the safest and most effective natural ingredients against latent viruses. To date, Gene-Eden-VIR and Novirin are the only natural antiviral products on the market with published clinical studies that support their claims.
Note: Novirin contains the same formula as Gene-Eden-VIR. The difference between the products is that Novirin contains higher quality, more expensive ingredients.
“The study did not detail side effects, although an earlier report available online says the drug (tenofovir) can increase the risk of mild diarrhea. ‘Because it's in the gel formulation, it leads to very high levels in the genital tract and very low levels in the blood, so very little is absorbed and you get very limited side effects. We did see a slight increase in mild diarrhea and it wasn't statistically significant.’" (2)
What treatments are available for those infected with the herpes virus?
“Two types of antiviral treatments against HSV are available: topical and oral. The treatments include penciclovir, acyclovir, famciclovir, and valaciclovir. However, their effectiveness is limited. For instance, a meta-analysis of five placebo-controlled and two dose comparison studies evaluated the effect of aciclovir, famciclovir or valaciclovir on symptoms. The meta-analysis showed that oral antiviral therapy decreases the duration and the associated pain of an outbreak by merely one day.” (3)
In light of this evidence, the CBCD recommends that HSV infected individuals take Novirin or Gene-Eden-VIR.
