FDF inputs into Health Select Committee childhood obesity inquiry
13 October 2015
FDF has given evidence to MPs as part of the Health Committee's inquiry into
childhood obesity. Ian Wright, Director General, appeared as part of the second
panel alongside the British Retail Consortium and Institute of Economic
Affairs.
The Committee heard from six witnesses in total, and will follow up with a
further
two sessions next week.
The aim of the inquiry is to gather evidence to influence the Government's forthcoming Childhood Obesity Strategy. Ian set out the progress that has been made by industry on a voluntary basis, both through the Responsibility Deal and before, and set out our willingness to work in partnership with Government and others to tackle the highly complex and multi-faceted issue of obesity.
The first panel consisted of health campaigners from Sustain, Action on Sugar and the British Medical Association (BMA) who faced question around the robustness of the evidence base for additional taxes, reformulation efforts and the proposals for marketing restrictions.
Ian highlighted companies' success in developing healthier low- and no-calorie options, changing portion sizes, providing on-pack nutrition information and investing in physical activity. The sessions can be watched here and please contact Jayne for further information.
