FDF response to Liz Truss' speech at Conservative Party Conference
5 October 2015
Responding to Defra Secretary of State Liz Truss' speech at the Conservative Party Conference, Ian Wright, Director General of the Food and Drink Federation (FDF), said:
“UK food and drink warmly applauds Liz Truss and the Government's ambition for Britain to become a Great Food Nation supported by a new generation of food and drink pioneers.
“To meet that future potential we must inspire young people to aim for food and drink careers from every entry point the industry can offer. And we must equip young people with food 'life-skills' throughout their education. These are vital lessons - from understanding where food comes from and how to read food labels, to developing primary cooking skills and knowing how to manage shopping budgets. People growing up without these life-skills are at a huge disadvantage.
“Government's 25 year Food and Farming plan aims to address the sector's looming skills gap. Nothing could be more important. So we'd ask the Secretary of State to look again at the Department for Education's proposal to remove the food technology A-Level from the syllabus. We can be the great food and drink nation - if all the levers of Government are used in that endeavour.”
