A materials science researcher at the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory has been elected to the rank of Fellow of ASM International, formerly known as the American Society for Metals.

Suveen Mathaudhu was recognized for his "scientific leadership, management and advocacy of the U.S. Army materials research efforts, and for the development and support of new advanced lightweight materials and bulk nanostructured materials."

ASM has more than 30,000 members worldwide and is the largest association of metals-focused materials scientists and engineers. The organization informs, educates and connects the materials community to solve problems and stimulate innovation around the world.

Mathaudhu recently joined PNNL as part of the laboratory's research initiative focusing on materials synthesis and simulation across scales, which focuses on developing novel approaches for making nanomaterials at the appropriate scale, or size, for the applications in which they will be used. He also has a joint appointment as an assistant professor of mechanical engineering and materials science and engineering at the University of California-Riverside.

Mathaudhu previously served as a program officer and materials engineer for the U.S. Army Research Laboratory and as an adjunct professor at North Carolina State University. He earned a bachelor's degree in engineering from Walla Walla University, and a master's degree and doctorate in mechanical engineering from Texas A&M University. He was the 2015 recipient of the American Association of Engineering Societies Norm Augustine Award for his "compelling and innovative approach to engaging children, young people, and the general public with a better understanding of real science and technology."

He will receive the award at the Materials Science & Technology Conference in Columbus in October.
