Nuts & Bolts

Who’s Racing:

Tudor United SportsCar Championship (P, PC, GTD & GTLM) – August 9, 2015 Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge – August 8, 2015

Track:

Road America – 4.048-mile, 14-turn road course

Length:

Tudor Championship – 2:40 hour race Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge Series – 2:30 hour time limit

Tire Sets:

Tudor Championship -P teams will be allowed 10 sets of tires for the race (including dry and wet tires); PC teams 7 sets; and GTD teams will receive 8 sets.

There is no set limit for the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge.

 WHICH TIRE ARE THEY USING:

**Continental Tire has designated, Golds, as the dry tire to be raced at Road America for Prototypes and Blacks for PC and GTD teams. If teams move to wet tires, the P and PC classes will move to, Blacks, while the GTD class will stay on, Golds.

P        Golds – the same tire compound used at Daytona, Watkins Glen and Road Atlanta.   Delta Wing     Blacks – because it’s the only car on this configuration, it will race on, Blacks, year round. PC    Blacks – the same tire compound used at Sebring, Laguna Seca, Detroit, Mosport, Lime Rock, VIR, COTA, and Road Atlanta GTD    Blacks – the same tire compound used at Sebring, Laguna Seca, Detroit, Watkins Glen, Lime Rock, VIR, COTA, and Road Atlanta CTSCC     This tire compound will be used at all other tracks this year.

Pit Window:

The pit window (fuel run) for the weekend is approximately 23-25 laps. Expect TUSC teams to use three to four sets of Continental tires during the race. These are just approximations and does not account for fuel mileage, weather or caution flag laps. It is not expected that teams will double stint on tires.

Track Characteristics:

Road America is typically easy on tires. The 14-turn road course is the longest circuit IMSA will visit in 2015 at 4.048-miles. There are a few challenging turns but for the most part, the track is very fast with long straightaway’s and there should be ample passing throughout all the race series. The track does not typically collect a lot of debris but with other series on the track, marbling will be a bit of an unknown.

FYI

  • How many? – Continental Tire will bring roughly 2,402 tires to Road America. This includes rain and slick tires. There is a possibility of rain on Friday afternoon so you may see the rain tires make an appearance.

Chicago Fire in the house – Continental is pleased to host two of Major League Soccer’s standout players from the Chicago Fire during Sunday’s TUDOR United SportsCar Championship race. Sean Johnson (goalie) and Lovel Palmer (defender) will be attending the race as special guests of Continental Tire. Palmer will act as the Grand Marshall for the Continental Tire Road Race Showcase while Johnson has been named Honorary Starter. Johnson is the 2014 winner of “What’Cha Got” while Palmer is a 2015 participant in the series, entering Season 2. Palmer’s episode is slated to air on FOX Sports 1 as part of Soccer Sunday on September 6. The two players will be coming straight from their Friday match against the Portland Timbers. In addition to their race duties, they have several meet and greets and interviews scheduled along with a road trip back to Chicago with Jordan and Ricky Taylor. Ride with the Taylor’s and Fire players via their social channels: Jordan (@jordan10taylor); Ricky (@RickyTaylor_10); Sean (@sjohn25); and Lovel (@lovelpalmer7).

  • Title Sponsor – Road America and Continental Tire agreed to a multi-year partnership last year that makes Continental Tire the title sponsor for Road America’s most popular sports car racing weekend August 7-9.  The “Continental Tire Road Race Showcase” will include the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge on Saturday and the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship race on Sunday, plus races from the IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge, IMSA Prototype Lites and the Mazda MX-5 Cup.

  • Racing & Soccer Collide in What’Cha Got – What happens when 14 Major League Soccer (MLS) players, legends and celebrities trade their boots for tires and a chance to get behind the wheel of a 2015 Lamborghini? The short format feature, “What’Cha Got”, presented by Continental Tire. Hosted by TUDOR United SportsCar Championship driver, Townsend Bell, this show will bring out the competitive edge in some of soccer’s top names including Alexi Lalas, Cobi Jones, Dom Dwyer (Sporting KC), Jordan Stewart (San Jose Earthquakes), and Andrew Farrell (New England Revolution). Airing on FOX Sports 1 as part of the “Soccer Sunday” lineup, this weekly show takes players from the pitch to the track and showcases some hidden talent. Episodes available on Continental’s YouTube channel following the TV airing.

  • Andrew Carbonell on Road America – Check out this week’s Continental Tire IMSA Driver Spotlight: Andrew Carbonell on SportsCar365.com. Carbonell gives some great insight into the characteristics of Road America and what it takes for the Mazda MX-5 to stay at the front of the field.
