Herpes Vaccine in Development Fails During Clinical Trials; The CBCD Reviews a Report

Those who suffer from a genital herpes infection may be disappointed to learn that a potential herpes vaccine under development from Vical Inc. has failed to meet expectations during initial clinical trials. The Center for the Biology of Chronic Disease (CBCD) is also disappointed in the results of the vaccine's clinical trials, since removing herpes from a long list of chronic diseases would be an important step forward for medicine.
However, the public should be aware that it is common for many vaccine candidates to fail during clinical trials. Also, developing an effective, therapeutic vaccine against the herpes virus (HSV-1 and HSV-2) and gaining FDA approval takes time.
