South Getting Its First Big Wind Farm Soon

Date: 7/12/2015

Iberdrola Renewables LLC is working on a $600 million wind farm project near Elizabeth City, North Carolina. The wind farm will have 102 turbines on 22,000 acres, with an additional 50 turbines planned. The project could generate approximately 204 megawatts, or enough electricity to power about 60,000 homes, and will be the first large onshore wind farm in the region. As described in the Energy Department's Enabling Wind Power Nationwide report, taller towers and bigger turbines are unlocking this new renewable energy potential in the South.

"If you go higher, the wind is better," said Jose Zayas, director of the Wind and Water Power Technologies Office at the Department of Energy. "The question is how you get there responsibly and economically."
