Ian Wright, Director General of the Food and Drink Federation, which represents the interests of the UK's largest manufacturing sector, said: “The Chancellor's investment in British business through the cut in corporation tax, a doubling in the Annual Investment Allowance and cuts in employer National Insurance contributions will be welcomed by food and drink manufacturers of all sizes.

“As the largest manufacturing sector in the UK, employing 400,000 people in every part of the country, food and drink is in a prime position to help drive up British productivity and we have a fantastic track record in a highly competitive market. We are determined to boost our competitiveness and will work with Government to play our part in the upcoming productivity plan.

“Our sector is facing significant skills shortages, particularly in engineering and technical roles and the apprenticeship route is a hugely important way to build our talent pipeline. We will be seeking further clarity on the detail of the apprenticeship levy as it is not clear how this will deliver the highly skilled professionals we need and meet the needs of both employers and workforce.

“Government's continued investment in research and innovation is welcome, but we would like to see increased support for post-farm gate, pre-competitive and collaborative research in food and drink manufacturing via Research Councils and Innovate UK. This will help our industry tackle the biggest challenges facing us – whether in public health or the environment.
