Whitehead Monckton Lawyers Raise Funds for Kent Law Clinic
Whitehead Monckton’s lawyers and support staff walked 10k around Canterbury to raise money for the Kent Law Clinic, an organisation offering free legal advice.
MAIDSTONE, KENT, UNITED KINGDOM, June 17, 2015 /EINPresswire.com/ -- On a sunny Saturday afternoon in June, the lawyers and support staff of Kent law firm Whitehead Monckton joined barristers, solicitors, lecturers, students and other local law firms to walk 10k around Canterbury to raise money for the Kent Law Clinic, a pro bono organisation offering legal advice and representation. The walk was also part of a series of walks taking place around the country aiming to raise awareness of the work carried out by the Access to Justice Foundation. The Whitehead Monckton team - along with their mascot, Molly the dog - made it round in a respectable 1 hour 50 minutes. The Kent law firm have so far raised a very impressive £360.00, with donations still coming in. And given the fact that the University of Kent has pledged to match pound-for-pound each donation, this represents a significant contribution to the fund.
The Kent Law Clinic is a partnership between students, academics, solicitors and barristers practising locally. The Law Clinic has two objects: to provide a public service for local people who need legal advice and representation but cannot afford to pay for it, and to enhance the education of students in the Kent Law School through direct experience of legal practice.
Many legal practitioners in Kent, including Whitehead Monckton's Emma Palmer (an associate solicitor in family law) and Chris Longden (an expert in dispute resolution), generously volunteer their time to advise clients (and work with students) at the Clinic Advice Sessions on Monday evenings, and also to provide welcome support to Clinic staff. The volunteers are mostly solicitors in Kent, but some are based in London. The Kent Law Clinic could not function as it does without their contribution.
The Kent Law Clinic has received numerous awards recognising and celebrating its mission to provide professional legal advice to those in society who are unable to afford solicitors' fees. It was shortlisted for the legal industry leading 'The Lawyer Awards' alongside a number of 'magic circle' law firms in 2010, 2012 and in 2013, winning The Lawyer Award for 'Ethical Initiative of the Year' in 2014. The Law Clinic and its students are routinely shortlisted for LawWorks Attorney General’s Awards, and (amongst other successes) were awarded the LawWorks Attorney General’s Award 2012 for the Best New Pro Bono Activity for the Clinic's Access to Land project. In 2007 the Clinic was awarded the Queen’s Anniversary Prize, with staff and students from the Clinic collecting the award from the Queen at Buckingham Palace.
The solicitors and support staff at Whitehead Monckton would like to thank all of those who generously donated their time and money to this very worthwhile cause. Donations are still welcome and can be made by visiting Whitehead Monckton's Just Giving page here: https://www.justgiving.com/Whitehead-Monckton1.
