Men over the age of 45 may be at greater risk for infection with certain strains of the human papillomavirus, according to a study from the Moffitt Cancer Center. Specifically, HPV 16, a viral strain that is strongly associated with head and neck cancers, was found to live in these mens' mouths for longer periods of time than in younger men. Researchers speculated that the reason older men may be at greater risk is due to a decline in the immune system associated with aging. “You aren’t able to fight off infection as well as when you were younger, and we know that HPV infection really flourishes in an environment where there is little immune response.” (1) In the United States, HPV caused oral cancer is 4 times higher among men.
