Millennium Water Alliance (MWA) is a unique
permanent alliance of international NGOs with expertise in water supply,
hygiene education and promotion of sanitation. MWA’s mission is to assist
people in developing countries with access to safe water, sanitation and
hygiene education by offering sustainable solutions through advocacy, learning
and collaborative programming.
MWA supports The Coca-Cola Africa Foundation’s
Replenish Africa Initiative (RAIN) through 2020 to improve sustainable safe water access for 6 million Africans; economically
empower up to 250,000 women and youth; promote health and hygiene in thousands
of communities, schools, and health centers; and return up to 18.5 billion
liters of water to nature and communities.
In Ethiopia, for
example, partners supported the implementation of newly
built ventilated improved pit latrines
at schools in the Arba Minch and Kemba districts, complete with hand-washing
facilities. In addition, as a result of this program, two women’s groups were
created. These groups have begun growing vegetables and fruit using overflow
water from reservoirs and water points.
MWA has also partnered with Coca-Cola Latin America
and The FEMSA Foundation, along with critical implementing partners, on Lazos
de Agua, or Water Links, a $12.3 million program to bring new and improved
water and sanitation access to more than 110,000 people in some of the poorest
regions of Colombia, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, and Nicaragua over the next
three years.
