Duke Energy Initiates Two Solar Projects in Florida
May 2015 - As part of the company's solar goals, Duke Energy has announced it will develop a $1 million solar panel system at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg (USFSP) in addition to developing a 5-megawatt (MW) solar facility to serve the Reedy Creek Improvement District near Orlando, Florida. Under the agreement with USFSP, a $1 million grant from Duke Energy will be used to support a solar battery research project on campus. A 100-kilowatt (kW) system will collect power through 318 solar panels and then store as much as 200 kW of energy in a battery located on a parking garage's ground floor to explore how to better store and use solar energy. Under a separate deal, Duke will construct, own, and operate a 5-MW solar power plant near the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida. The Reedy Creek Improvement District has agreed to buy the power plant's output under a 15-year contract. The facility's 48,000 solar panels will occupy approximately 20 acres near the Disney World Resort and are expected to be operational by the end of 2015.
