Herpes Zoster Infection (Shingles) Linked to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS); CBCD Reviews the Medical Evidence
A study found “pivotal evidence of postviral fatigue among patients with HZ infection.” (1)
“Infected with the varicella zoster virus (VZV)? The CBCD recommends taking Gene-Eden-VIR or Novirin.” - Greg Bennett, CBCD
After infection with the varicella zoster virus (VZV), the virus that causes both chickenpox and herpes zoster (shingles), individuals are at twice the risk of developing Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). (1) Dr. Shapiro wrote that “Virtually all CFS symptoms could be produced by an infection of the peripheral ganglia, with infection of the autonomic ganglia causing fatigue, postural hypotension, and sleep disturbances, and infection of the sensory ganglia causing sensory symptoms such as chronic pain. Furthermore, infections of the peripheral ganglia are known to cause long-term nerve dysfunction, which would help explain the chronic course of CFS. Herpes viruses have long been suspected as the cause of CFS.” (2) The Center for the Biology of Chronic Disease (CBCD) recommends that individuals infected with VZV take Gene-Eden-VIR or Novirin. The formula of these natural antiviral products was designed to help the immune system target the latent form of the virus that causes shingles.

The CBCD therefore urges everyone who has ever had chickenpox to learn about Novirin and Gene-Eden-VIR. The formula of Novirin and Gene-Eden-VIR was tested by Hanan Polansky and Edan Itzkovitz from the Center for the Biology of Chronic Disease (CBCD) in two clinical studies that followed FDA guidelines. The studies showed that the Novirin and Gene-Eden-VIR formula is effective against viruses in the herpes family, including HSV-1, HSV-2, the Epstein Barr Virus (EBV), the human cytomegalovirus (CMV), and others. The clinical studies were published in the peer reviewed, medical journal Pharmacology & Pharmacy, the first, in a special edition on Advances in Antiviral Drugs. Study authors wrote that, “individuals infected with a (herpes virus)…reported a safe decrease in their symptoms following treatment with Gene-Eden-VIR.” (3) The study authors also wrote that, “We observed a statistically significant decrease in the severity, duration, and frequency of symptoms.” (3)

Gene-Eden-VIR and Novirin are natural antiviral dietary supplements. Their formula contains five natural ingredients: Selenium, Camellia Sinesis Extract, Quercetin, Cinnamomum Extract, and Licorice Extract. The first ingredient is a trace element, and the other four are plant extracts. Each ingredient and its dose was chosen through a scientific approach. Scientists at polyDNA, the company that invented and patented the formula, scanned thousands of scientific and medical papers published in various medical and scientific journals, and identified the safest and most effective natural ingredients against latent viruses.
To date, Novirin and Gene-Eden-VIR are the only natural antiviral products on the market with published clinical studies that support their claims. Note: Novirin has the same formula as Gene-Eden-VIR. However, it contains higher quality and more expensive ingredients.
Dr. Shapiro continued, writing that “virtually all CFS symptoms could be produced by an infection of the peripheral ganglia, with infection of the autonomic ganglia causing fatigue, postural hypotension, and sleep disturbances, and infection of the sensory ganglia causing sensory symptoms such as chronic pain.” (2) Dr. Shapiro is from the University of Michigan. What Dr. Shapiro means, is that when the latent VZV infects the nerves, individuals can experience long term loss of memory or concentration, feeling unrefreshed after sleep, muscle pain, headaches, multi-joint pain without redness or swelling, and a frequent sore throat.
“Infections of the peripheral ganglia are known to cause long-term nerve dysfunction, which would help explain the chronic course of CFS. Herpes viruses have long been suspected as the cause of CFS; this theory has recently been supported by studies showing that administering antiherpes agents causes substantial improvement in some CFS patients.” (2)
“Shingles is caused by the varicella zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox. After a person recovers from chickenpox, the virus stays in the body in a dormant (inactive) (latent) state. For reasons that are not fully known, the virus can reactivate years later, causing shingles.” (4).
“A reactivation of VZV and an outbreak of Shingles can be bad enough without having to worry about the possibility of developing Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. That’s why we recommend helping the immune system target the latent Varicella Zoster Virus.” - Greg Bennett, CBCD
A recent post marketing clinical study published in the peer reviewed, medical journal Pharmacology & Pharmacy, in a special edition on Advances in Antiviral Drugs on August 12, 2013 showed that the Gene-Eden-VIR and Novirin formula, which includes 5 natural ingredients, safely reduced viral symptoms (3). Another study published in the same journal showed that this same formula helped reduce symptoms of fatigue. (5)
