Several studies have found that the cytomegalovirus (CMV) may be a cause of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). According to Dr. Marcelo J. Filizzola, “since IBD is a well-documented immunologic disorder, it has been suggested that CMV and other infectious agents play a role in triggering the development or exacerbation of this disease.” Dr. Filizzola is from the division of infectious diseases at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. The Center for the Biology of Chronic Disease (CBCD) recommends that infected individuals take Gene-Eden-VIR or Novirin to help their immune system target the latent CMV, before the virus has an opportunity to reactivate.

The formula of Gene-Eden-VIR and Novirin was tested by Hanan Polansky and Edan Itzkovitz from the CBCD in two clinical studies that followed FDA guidelines.
