March 2015 - Google plans to power its Googleplex headquarters in Mountain View, California with energy from a wind farm on the Altamont Pass in Central California. Under a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Florida-based NextEra Energy, Google will purchase 50 percent, or nearly 43 megawatts, of the power that will be produced by NextEra's seven-square-mile Altamont Pass wind site beginning in 2016. The deal will replace about 770 old turbines from the 1980s with 48 new machines, which are expected to produce twice as much energy. The electricity purchased through the PPA will be enough to provide Google's corporate campus with 100% renewable energy.
