"Data Privacy and the Smart Grid: A Voluntary Code of Conduct" Now Available

Over the last 22 months, the Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability (OE) and the Federal Smart Grid Task Force have facilitated a multi-stakeholder process to develop a Voluntary Code of Conduct (VCC) for utilities and third parties that addresses privacy related to data enabled by smart grid technologies. The final Data Privacy and the Smart Grid: A Voluntary Code of Conduct is now available for downloading.

During the development of the Code, industry stakeholders attended open meetings and participated in work group activities to draft the VCC's principles. In September 2014, the Energy Department issued a Federal Register Notice announcing the availability of the draft VCC for public comment. The public comment period closed in October 2014. In December 2014, OE in coordination with the Federal Smart Grid Task Force conducted a webinar to conclude the development phase of the VCC.
