Editing Genius Andrew Coutts Pushes the Envelope with Two Upcoming Films
Andrew Coutts lends his vast editing talents to the upcoming films "Bloodsucking Bastards" and "Anguish."
LOS ANGELES, CA, USA, January 9, 2015 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Leading horror editor Andrew Coutts has taken the entertainment industry by storm with his ability to cut films in a way that evokes sheer terror in his audience. Coutts, who is best known for his work as the editor of "Saw VI" and "Saw 3D: The Final Chapter," recently wrapped production on the films "Bloodsucking Bastards" and "Anguish," which will be released this year."Bloodsucking Bastards" is a comedy horror film that follows Evan, an overworked employee who loses a promotion to his long time nemesis at the soul-crushing company where they both work. Aside from the paranoia that arises over his job stability due to his nemesis’s newfound power, Evan begins to think the office has become a haven for the undead as a mysterious string of disappearances and unexplainable deaths begin to occur. The film stars award-winning actor Franz Kranz from the films "The Cabin in the Woods," "Training Day," and "Much Ado About Nothing," and Pedro Pascal from the hit television series "Game of Thrones," "Homeland," "The Mentalist," "Graceland" and "The Good Wife."
Coutts handled the work of an entire editing department on the film due to the fact that the film's production budget was smaller than most of the other films he has worked on. He admits, "On bigger productions you’d usually have a team of people and facilities processing dailies, syncing sound and preparing the footage for the edit, I had to handle all of that myself before even getting to the point where I could begin the creative side of editing."
Patrick Rizzotti, one of the producers of "Bloodsucking Bastards," explains, "We were very fortunate and lucky to have Andrew come on board to cut our film. His experience and instincts was an integral part of our final product. We look forward to working with him again, and again."
Coutts' editing work was a cornerstone in the creative development of the film as it was up to him to decipher the best timing and cuts needed to drive the film's comedy and horror elements. Coutts says some of the challenges he faced was, "Finding the right jokes, rhythms and pacing for the film to hit the right tone and make sure we were hitting the comedy beats as strongly as possible. The director and a number of the cast are from Dr. God, a Los Angeles based improvisational comedy group, so there were a lot of options in the editing room for variations on jokes and comedy moments."
The world premiere of "Bloodsucking Bastards" is scheduled for January 23 where it will open the 2015 Slamdance Film Festival. This year marks the 21st edition of the Slamdance Film Festival, which takes place annually in Park City, Utah. According to the festival website, Slamdance has been credited with the discovery of such notable filmmakers as directors Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight), Marc Forster (Quantum of Solace), Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite), Oren Peli (Paranormal Activity), Benh Zeitlin (Beasts of the Southern Wild), Seth Gordon (Horrible Bosses), Lynn Shelton (Your Sister's Sister), and Lena Dunham (Girls).
In addition to "Bloodsucking Bastards," Andrew Coutts also worked as the editor of the film "Anguish," which will debut later this year. "Anguish" is a psychological thriller that follows a troubled young girl as she experiences a slew of frightening paranormal encounters that cause her to question whether what she is experiencing is real or if she has become possessed by the spirit of another dead teen.
Coutts says, "The tricky part of telling this story was that the audience needs to be as unsure as the girl is if what is happening to her is real or just in her head. We needed to find the way to maximize the audience relating to the girl and give them the feeling like they are along with her for her journey and not just passive viewers."
The film stars multi-award winning actress Ryan Simpkins from the films "Surveillance," "Gardens of the Night," "Pride and Glory," and "Revolutionary Road," Karina Logue from "Argo," "Minority Report," and "Zodiac," and Ryan O'Nan from "Freelancers," "The Iceman," "The Frozen Ground," and "Eat Pray Love."
Earlier in 2014, Andrew Coutts also worked as the editor on the second season of Fox's Primetime Emmy Nominated television series "Sleepy Hollow," and the comedy series "Hungry." The talented editor also contributed his unparalleled skills to the upcoming film "Grizzly," which stars Oscar Award winner Billy Bob Thornton and James Marsden from the "X-Men" films, "Superman Returns," "Robot & Frank," and many others. "Grizzly" is an action packed horror film that follows two estranged brothers who reunite in the Alaskan wild and embark on a two-day hike only to find themselves fighting for survival after a ferocious grizzly bear decides the make them his prey.
Andrew Coutts' superior work as an editor has not only made him a highly sought after creative talent in the industry, but it has also garnered him several prestigious award nominations. In 2013 Andrew Coutts was nominated for the Best Editing Award for the film "Sequence" at the Canadian Cinema Editors Awards, as well as for a Directors Guild of Canada Team Award for his work on the series "In God's Country" in 2007. When it comes to the horror genre, Coutts has proven on countless occasions over the last decade that he is the kind of editor who can take hours of footage and bring the director’s vision to life in a way that seamlessly brings a story to life and elicits blood-curdling fear within the audience.
Be sure to keep your eyes out for his upcoming films "Bloodsucking Bastards," and "Anguish"!
