Columbia Association to Purchase Solar Energy

January 2015 - Columbia Association (CA), a nonprofit service corporation that manages many of Columbia, Maryland's fitness and recreational facilities, agreed a 20-year contract to annually purchase 2,500 megawatt-hours of solar energy from Nixon's Farm in West Friendship, Maryland. The two-megawatt system will provide nearly 25 percent of CA's electricity consumption for the year. CA's portion of the farm is approximately 12 acres. The purchase is estimated to provide enough power to meet the needs of two of CA's fitness facilities: Columbia Athletic Club and Columbia Gym. In addition to the generation of power, this project is estimated to eliminate about 1,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions.
