Neurosurgery Section Annual Clinic Day Will Educate Physicians, Nurses & PAs On Surgical Techniques

Onesti, M.D., F.A.C.S. will serve as moderators of -- and give opening remarks at -- Neurosurgery Section Annual Clinic Day, an educational symposium for physicians, nurses, physician assistants and other health care professionals. Dr. Mechanic is also Program Chair for the symposium, which is sponsored by the Brooklyn & Long Island Chapter of the American College of Surgeons and The Nassau Surgical Society, Inc. The program will take place Wednesday, December 3, 2014, 11:30 a.m. – 5:15 p.m., at the Long Island Marriott (Hempstead Turnpike, Uniondale, NY).In addition to being an attending neurosurgeon at NSPC, Dr. Mechanic serves as Chief of the Division of Neurosurgery, NS-LIJ Huntington Hospital, and as President of The Nassau Surgical Society. Dr. Onesti serves as Director of Neurosurgery at South Nassau Communities Hospital.
“On completion of this program, we want attendees to be able to understand new concepts in neurosurgical sub-specialties, to compare them with old ones, and to be able to apply or withhold innovative treatment modalities using new skills they acquire at Clinic Day,” said Dr. Mechanic.
The symposium will feature many of the region’s leading experts on various neurosurgical topics, as well as speakers who will provide a national perspective on issues facing surgeons.
The program will kick off with a luncheon, during which Christian Shalgian, Director of the American College of Surgeons’ Division of Advocacy and Health Policy, will provide a legislative update. Anna Pou, M.D., F.A.C.S., Professor of Otolaryngology, LSU Health Science, will deliver the keynote address on the legal and psychological repercussions of mass casualty events, including discussion of the experiences of health care professionals who cared for patients during Hurricane Katrina.
Speakers in the afternoon session will provide the latest information on a range of neurosurgical topics. Paolo A. Bolognese, M.D., Director of the NSPC Chiari Malformation Neurosurgical Center, will speak on “Trans Condylar Screws for Occipito-cranial Fixation.” John Pile-Spellman, M.D., F.A.C.R., who is attending interventional neuroradiologist with the NSPC Cerebrovascular/Endovascular Center and Adjunct Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Columbia University, will provide a “Neuro-Endovascular Update.” Ivan Mikolaenko, M.D., attending neurointensivist with NSPC and Chair of the Neurology/Neurosurgery Disease Management Steering Committee at South Nassau Communities Hospital, will cover “Decompressive Craniectomy Following Malignant Stroke: Controversies of Standard of Care and Ethical Implications.” Katrina Maniec, P.A., physician assistant with NSPC, will discuss “Physician Assistants in Neurosurgery.”
Also speaking will be Lawrence S. Chin, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.A.A.N.S., Robert B. and Molly G. King Professor and Chair, Department of Neurosurgery, SUNY Upstate Medical University. Dr. Chin will discuss “Current Treatment of Vestibular Schwannoma.” Jaime Ullman, M.D., Associate Professor, Department of Neurosurgery, Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine, will present on “Decompressive Craniectomy for Trauma: Past, Present and Future.”
The program will also feature a poster contest for medical residents.
4.5 C.M.E. credits will be provided to those attending the entire program. The registration fee is $75 for physician non-members of The Nassau Surgical Society to attend and receive C.M.E. credits; $125 for physician non-members to attend, receive C.M.E. and join The Society; and $50 for nurses, physician assistants and allied health professionals.
