Responding to the Ebola Health Crisis
// Dallas, Texas, United States // Attorney Keith Clouse (Blog) // Keith Clouse
North Texans reacted with shock and fear after learning that the first Ebola victim in the United States received treatment at a Dallas-area hospital. Keith Clouse, a Dallas employment law attorney, offers these suggestions to employers who are concerned about a potential health crisis.
First of all, try not to panic. Multiple entities are working to prevent the virus’s spread, and experts have been summoned to Dallas. But, employers should be aware that certain workers are at a higher risk of contracting the virus because of exposure to infected individuals. Employers with employees in the healthcare industry or the aviation industry should evaluate their infection control protocols and should follow any directives or guidelines issued by the Centers for Disease Control.
Should the virus spread, employers in non-high risk operations should make plans for continuing operations with a dramatically reduced workforce. This includes identifying critical business functions and cross-training staff members so they can perform these critical roles. An employer should also take steps to ensure the workplace is as sanitary as possible and that workers know what to do should they develop symptoms.
