A Chessington-based importer, processor and wholesaler of fresh fish and seafood has scooped a national award for creating a great place to work. New England Seafood won the coveted Good Employer Award at last night's prestigious Food and Drink Federation (FDF) Awards, held at London's The Brewery.

The FDF Awards celebrate businesses across the food and drink industry and the Good Employer Award recognises the business that has made an extra effort to create a positive working environment for employees.

New England Seafood has established a number of initiatives to help employees balance work and personal life, improve fitness and manage any short or longer term illnesses. By following the national Workplace Wellbeing Charter framework, the company has taken a structured approach to staff wellbeing which has resulted in the company receiving a Mayor of London's Achievement Award and, more recently, an Excellence Award. Examples of staff benefits include access to a sports and social activity funding pot; an opportunity to invite family to see inside the workplace during the annual 'Factory Open Day'; and free English language classes for migrant workers.

FDF's Director of Economic and Commercial Services Steve Barnes said: “New England Seafood has achieved national recognition for its responsible approach to its employees, having won a Workplace Wellbeing Charter Excellence Award, and now, with this FDF Award win, it has recognition from industry peers.

“The company's positive investment in its team has clearly delivered numerous health and social benefits to its biggest asset, its people, while reducing staff turnover and absenteeism. We congratulate management for the creativity that they have applied and commitment that they've shown to their health at work programme.“
