Birmingham-based Mondeléz International scooped two prizes at last night's prestigious Food and Drink Federation (FDF) Awards. The ceremony at London's The Brewery celebrated businesses across the food and drink industry. The company chalked up wins in the Environmental Leadership Award and Apprentice of the Year.

Environmental Leadership

The award recognised Mondeléz International's 'Cocoa Life programme' which aims to improve living conditions and sustainable sourcing of more than 200,000 cocoa families and about one million farming communities. Mondeléz International announced the 10 year investment of $400 million in 2012 and continues its commitment to the project by creating partnerships with communities, governments, national and international non-government organisations and supply chain partners to find solutions.

FDF's Director of Economic and Commercial Services Steve Barnes said: “FDF applauds Mondeléz International's dedication to improving sustainable cocoa supply. The Cocoa Life programme initiatives support a range of action plans including the improvement to infrastructure and training programmes for cocoa farming communities which will ultimately help to improve productivity.“

Apprentice of the Year - Adam Ravenscroft

Sponsored by Aktrion Food Drink, the Food and Drink Apprentice of the Year award commends individuals that have made an extraordinary contribution to the food and drink industry.

Adam Ravenscroft, a third year engineering apprentice at the Bournville chocolate factory, was presented with the award for his contribution to and enthusiasm about food manufacturing. Adam's ability to think for himself, analyse problems and test results has resulted in numerous changes to machinery and has inspired the team to think more creatively. He is also a passionate campaigner for the industry; recently speaking to MP's at Downing Street on his apprenticeship and issues young people face. In his spare time he also volunteers for the British Paralympics shooting team helping to adapt and customise the team's wheelchairs.

FDF's Director of Economic and Commercial Services Steve Barnes said: “Adam is a worthy winner, having shown a commitment to driving improvements in the company's supply chain and inspiring younger generations to consider a career in food. He has worked with the Feeding Britain's Future Campaign to help get unemployed people back into work, and is instrumental in organising factory site visits for young people.“

Category sponsor Aktrion Food Drink Director Chris Baumann said: “As a manufacturing support services provider primarily involving the provision of managed teams for such functions as hygiene cleaning, pick, pick despatch, maintenance, FM, etc, people are at the forefront of our business and a lot of our time is focussed on training and developing our people. Therefore, it is great to support and recognise likeminded companies who do the same through their apprenticeship schemes.“
