Mars UK is Health and Wellbeing Champion at FDF Awards
Slough-based manufacturer Mars UK scooped the award for Health and Wellbeing Champion for its 'FA Mars Just Play' initiative at last night's prestigious Food and Drink Federation (FDF) Awards. The ceremony at London's The Brewery celebrated businesses across the food and drink industry.
Mars UK came out top in this award category, which was sponsored by Nestlé UK, for its fitness programme 'FA Mars Just Play', a partnership with the Football Association (FA), which inspires adults to play football, whatever their level of experience and ability.
Having set a target to get 150,000 new participants aged 16 or over playing the game for at least 30 minutes a week by September 2013, the Just Play programme smashed this target by Creating 200,000 adult places at Just Play kickabouts. The partners also opened over 200 Just Play centers nationwide and trained over 400 Just Play organisers. Inspired by the success so far, Mars and The FA have set a new target to create one million opportunities to join a Just Play session between now and 2018.
FDF's Director of Economic and Commercial Services Steve Barnes said: “Making a difference to the nation's health and helping to tackle obesity is a key priority for FDF and its members. Mars' achievement in boosting participation in grassroots adult football, which has been declining for some time, is admirable. Initiatives such as these which help adults of all ages, abilities and backgrounds to access sport and become more active can make a lasting, positive impact on the individuals and communities that engage with them.“
Category sponsor Fiona Kendrick, Chairman and Chief Executive, Nestlé UK Ireland said: “Nestlé is committed to ensuring Nutrition, Health and Wellness is at the heart of everything we do and we are continually challenging ourselves to provide tastier and healthier products for our consumers; ultimately, making healthy choices easier.“
“However, the scale of the Public Health challenges facing us today requires collective action and that is why, it is with great pleasure that Nestlé is sponsoring the FDF Health and Wellbeing Award; recognising companies' initiatives that are making a difference in helping to improve the nation's health and encouraging healthier lifestyles.“
