Long Island's First Local Storytelling Slam Debuts In Smithtown, NY

SMITHTOWN, NY, USA, September 9, 2014 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Long Island's first local storytelling slam, titled (mostly) True Things is scheduled for Saturday Sept. 27, 2014, 7 pm at Lifestage, Inc, 496 Smithtown Bypass, Suite 202, Smithtown, NY 11787. Tickets are $5. For reservations, call 631-366-4265. This slam will feature 5 storytellers sharing an 8-10 minute story, without notes, and one of those stories will be absolutely true. The other 4 might be entirely fabricated or a true narrative peppered with little white lies. After the stories, the audience can question the storytellers, then vote for the nothing-but-the-truth teller. Winners get a prize. Everyone experiences the humor, heart and human connection that makes live storytelling of true - or mostly true - personal accounts a compelling and popular form of entertainment. This is the first of a monthly series, and the theme of this slam is "Firsts." These events will feature well-known Long Island personalities, professionals from Long Island-based institutions like Brookhaven Labs, Stonybrook University and local theatres, and business owners as well as Long Island people who are stepping into the spotlight for the first time.

The event will be hosted by writer/performer and storyteller Jude Treder-Wolff, whose solo storytelling show Crazytown: My First Psychopath was featured at The Peoples Improv Theater, Actors Theatre Workshop, The Midtown International Theatre Festival, The Charles B. Wang Center at Stonybrook University and the 2012 Chicago and San Francisco Fringe Festivals. She performs at a wide variety of New York City venues including New York Comedy Club, Stand-Up New York, The Duplex, and Danny's Skylight Room and Rose's Turn as well as clubs and fundraising events around the country. Her story "Winter Storm" is on the Christmas Day 2013 broadcast of Kevin Allison's RISK! podcast.

Storytelling slams are increasingly popular entertainment forms available in live performance events as well as podcasts, such as The Moth and RISK!. Communities that feature live storytelling events have increased social capital and engagement, and find links between the success of local arts events like this and enhanced economic activity.

This event is sponsored by Lifestage, Inc, a training/consulting company that offers creative and arts-based training for personal and professional development. Contact Jude Treder-Wolff at 631-366-4265 (office) or 516-658-1804 (cell), or by email at lifestage_2000@yahoo.com. More information about this event is available at www.lifestage.org.
