Foodie challenge resources developed for Scots Teachers
18 August 2014
The Scottish Food and Drink Federation (SFDF) has launched a trio of free, downloadable food challenge toolkits for teachers in Scotland to show pupils how food and drink products are developed and brought to market.
Teachers can register on the SFDF website to download The 'Ultimate Food and Drink Challenge' toolkit which provide insight into the exciting roles available in the industry and will help pupils understand how what they learn at school can be put to use in the workplace.
Developed by SFDF's Schools Programme – A Future in Food, with the support of industry and education partnerships, these toolkits will enable teachers in Scotland to run an innovative food challenge for students between 10-14 years that fits within their wider school curriculum.
Educators can choose how they use the materials depending on the learning outcomes required from each class, the student interests and other resources available such as partnership opportunities.
Some of the key learning benefits of each challenge include:
- providing a context for learning for pupils;
- supporting delivery of the curriculum and interdisciplinary learning;
- demonstrating the industry relevance over a broad range of subjects, including maths, science, technology, ICT, business studies and health and wellbeing;
- inspiring school children to make connections between the food on their plates and what they are learning in schools to employment in the food and drink industry; and
- demonstrating the skills required to work in the modern food and drink industry and the range of jobs and careers available.
Moira Stalker, SFDF Schools Programme Coordinator, said: “We are excited to launch resources to support the Ultimate Food and Drink Challenge. This innovative, comprehensive challenge has been developed by SFDF, based on existing experience with school and industry. The toolkits can also be used as standalone resources to support schools and industry running interdisciplinary learning activities. We hope it will inspire even more Scottish youngsters to consider a rewarding career in food and drink.”
The Ultimate Food and Drink Challenge is available on SFDF's website, register for instant access.
