Food industry experts share top career tips with future leaders
A tale of business triumph over adversity, an inspirational marketing story and insightful career advice were inspiring highlights for some of the UK's future food industry leaders at last week's 'Taste the Future' event in Liverpool.
The event, hosted by the Food and Drink Federation (FDF), was held as part of Food and Drink Week at the International Festival for Business and aimed to motivate aspiring CEOs and senior staff, HR managers, and trainers mentoring senior level people.
The top pieces of career advice given to the future industry leaders included:
- Be passionate - Love what you do and who you do it for.
- Take control - Set team goals and strategies in order to shape a healthy and confident working culture.
- Understand roles and responsibilities - A leader gets people to understand a vision and help others achieve their goals, and a manager ensures the day to day work is operating efficiently.
- Talk to others - Build relationships and alliances with other people in your industry, and be open to feedback.
Guest speakers who shared their personal stories and examples of how they had accomplished their career successes included: Martin Glenn, CEO of United Biscuits; Maria Whitehead MBE, Director of Hawkshead Relish; Sue Swanborough, HR Director of General Mills; and motivational speaker, BJ Cunningham.
Speaker, Sue Swanborough, HR Director of General Mills, said: "As a company, our whole ethos is about nourishing lives in everything we do, so we are delighted to support the Food and Drink Federation in its work to inspire the next generation of food and drink industry leaders."
Steve Barnes, Economics Commercial Services Director at FDF, said: “Future food industry leaders were given firsthand knowledge of the recipe for career success by some big industry names. Not only did delegates take away top tips on how to achieve their goals, speakers also covered some of the common mistakes made by people on their way up the career ladder. It was a fantastic and fun learning experience for all present on the day.”
The event was sponsored by General Mills and IFB.
